6 signs your vehicle is overdue for an oil change

Oil is the cheapest insurance your engine has. Fresh oil keeps everything lubricated, cool, and clean, and when it wears out, the damage it prevents gets expensive fast. If you can't remember your last change, here are the signs your vehicle is trying to tell you something.

1. The oil looks dark and gritty

Pull the dipstick, wipe it, dip it again, and look. Fresh oil is smooth and amber to light brown. Oil that's overdue turns dark, thick, and sometimes gritty to the touch. If it looks like coffee and feels grainy, it has done its job and then some.

2. The engine sounds louder or rougher

Oil is also a sound dampener. As it breaks down and thins out, metal parts move with less cushion, and the engine can get noticeably louder, with more ticking or knocking. A vehicle that suddenly sounds busier than usual is often just hungry for fresh oil.

3. A dashboard light comes on

The most obvious one. An oil-change reminder, an oil-pressure light, or a check-engine light can all point to oil that's overdue or low. The oil-pressure light especially is one to take seriously, don't keep driving on it.

4. You catch a burning-oil smell

Old, broken-down oil burns off more easily, and a small leak onto hot engine parts gives off a distinct burnt smell. If you notice it, especially after the engine has been running a while, it's worth getting checked.

5. The vehicle feels sluggish or down on power

Clean oil reduces friction. Dirty, worn oil makes the engine work harder for the same result, which can show up as slightly worse acceleration or a dip in fuel economy. It's subtle, but it adds up over time.

6. You honestly can't remember the last one

This is the most common sign of all. If you're doing mental math and coming up blank, it's almost certainly time. Rather than guess, it's easier to just get it done and start the clock fresh.

Stay ahead of it instead

The easiest fix for all of this is to never get behind in the first place. A service plan keeps your vehicle's interval on file and brings the change to your driveway when it's due, so you're never reading the tea leaves on your dipstick again.
